Re: day care

Jennifer, My son is 4yrs old with CAH, salt-wasting. I also have a 6yr old daughter non-CAH. Both my children have always been in a private home day care situation. They made a change when my daughter was just shy of 4 and my son was a yr and a half to another private home. I hated to make a move and was very concerned that I would not find anyone who would be so wonderful to my children and so responsible about administering my son's meds. I have never left the emergency shot with either of the moms who have cared for my son. I am with-in a 15-20 minute ride from them and should my son become ill (just as my daughter can) I get a phone call at the office to discuss the options and if I need to go get them. Our endo always advised that the shot was for long trips, vacations etc. that brought us far from a hospital. I am now faced with my son needing to go into preschool in the fall. We moved this past fall from Mass to New Hampshire and we do not have preschools or kindergarten in New Hampshire. The only such things are in private centers or day care facilities. I have signed my son up at a day care facility for 3 days and I was very concerned about their administering his mid day meds. But I have to start sometime. My son is getting old enough to start being involved with remembering his meds so it will help. He will remain in the private home for the other two days. I will not leave the injectable with the school. In fact we just used the injectable for the first time two weekends ago. I choose a private home setting for many reasons and when I had to make a change in day care 2.5 yrs ago I had no intention of using a day care facility because of my sons meds. I was very concerned about them remembering consistentaly (day to day at the very same time) to administer his meds. There are so many children and I was concerned they would get so busy they would forget. In a private home they are limited to 6 children and I believe it is more managable to remember meds. Again this is a concern that I am now faced with in the fall but I am going to get my son a watch with an alarm so that he can remind them that he needs his meds. Good luck!
