Re: questions on sleep/GI distress from Cortef--been there!

Let me tell you about stomach upset! When our son was started on Cortef at 8 days old, the hospital nurses never gave it with milk. In fact it was most probably on an empty stomach! I know steroids are to be given after meals due to the GI distress they cause, but with the trauma of our son's diagnosis and me still recovering from a C-section I didn't pay close attention to this as I should. A few days after getting him home he began to cry from early morning until 1-2 am. My husband and I had a colicky daughter who cried for 3 months, so we know what colic is like. However, our son seemed to have a different problem. After giving him his Cortef and Florinef in the am about an hour later he would start fussing. Then 3 hours later when it was time to feed him his bottle he had a hard time taking the formula. There was this loud gassy sound in his stomach that could be heard by anyone sitting within 5 feet of him. It was like there was a huge gas bubble stuck inside and it was obstructing his stomach so he couldn't eat. If he did eat he cried, burped as loud as any man, and many times would throw up. 3 hours later he would seem better and could take that bottle(probably because the Cortef was digested and it was almost time for another dose). Then a dose of Cortef at 2-3pm and the whole cycle began again. Finally, I got smart and started giving his Cortef about an hour or 2 earlier to see if indeed it was related to the med. The same thing happened an hour after giving the med. He was miserable. At our 2 month visit to the pediatrician I told him I thought he needed to be on Zantac because of this problem. He thought it was strange also and agreed, but wanted to call a fellow pediatric gastroenterologist. They both concurred that he should begin Zantac. That very night after giving my son one dose of Zantac the loud "ocean" sounds stopped. A week later and with a formula change for good measure, the baby stopped crying!!Just as I was going back to work!A side note: while on Christmas vacation at a relative's house our baby got a stomach virus. We did call the pediatrician but his partner was on call. I asked him what he thought about the Cortef causing GI distress. He said "no it would not" and acted like we were crazy for asking. Boy was he wrong! Moral of the story-yes Cortef can cause GI distress, but not in all patients. My Endo said none of his CAH kids have had a problem. He only has a handfull . As for sleep, if it is upsetting his tummy that may be the cause for waking. Food would be helpful. Our son has had no problem sleeping at night since he turned 3 months old(he is now 6 months). However, close to a year some kids have what is called "night terrors" that seem to wake them for no reason. Ask your pediatrician and Endo. Good luck, and sorry this was so long. I hope it will help somone. Michele
