Hi Rose! There are several types of CAH and varying levels of severity in this disorder. The non-salt losing CAH child can sometimes go undetected for years Make a list to take to the Dr’s. Take a pencil to check off each item. Be assertive but polite. Don’t leave until you have all items answered and checked off! Some things you might want to include on this list are: 1. Blood study chemistry (levels of salt, water in the blood as some CAH-ers are salt losers and have the more severe form of CAH) 2. Adrenal and Pituitary Hormone Levels in the blood 3 Chromosome Studies (Sex type) 4. Blood Typing (Genetic) 5. 24 hr urine sample 6. Adrenal Gland Stimulation Test (or ACTH test) 7. Bone age scan I don’t recall you mentioning a bone age scan was done on your daughter. I believe that the cortisol test you refer to is the ACTH stimulation test. It is administered in the hospital and will measure the amount of cortisol the adrenals can (or cannot) produce. This is how my daughter’s disorder was finally diagnosed when she was 3. All her other blood work was normal. Also her bone age scan showed that she was developing more rapidly than normal. Please note that if your daughter has the surgery and does have CAH, she will be given extra injections of hydrocortisone to prevent an adrenal crisis. This is imperative for any CAH person undergoing a general anaesthetic. Therefore, it is an absolute must that you determine the possibility of CAH before going ahead with any surgery. Good luck! Peg
