Introduce myself
5/17/99 10:12 PM
My name is Jennifer. I'm 31 and I was recently just diagnosed with CAH. I believe I have always had it. I had the early appearance of pubic hair (no axillary hair 'til much later), but I think I'm normal height though extremely small-boned. I've been bugging doctors to test me for the disease after watching 20/20 a few years ago, but I couldn't get anyone to take it seriously until recently. My symptoms are hirsutism,(extremely hairy legs and pubic hair spreading almost to my hip-bones and down the inside of my thighs; kind of hairy arms and I'm helplessly watching the peach-fuzz darken on my face, stomach, breasts and back; bleeding in between periods and 35-day cycles, and when I was 2 I had some mysterious operation "down there" that my parents supposedly don't remember and have no records for. (I was traumatized afterward; my sister jokes to this day that I was never the same after that. So how could my parents not know what it was about?) I also went through varying periods of "Tomboy"ism, but then was voted "Class Lady" in fifth grade and senior year of high school.(Quite bizarre variations in behavior?) I have not been prescribed anything yet until I have a second meeting with an endo. I am quite distraught -- even though I have it relatively easy compared to others, and thank God every day it hasn't been worse, I am terrified of going on medications. I've never been on meds in my life and always considered myself very healthy. I've also always been quite skinny -- even accused of anorexia now and then -- and I don't know what I'll do if I gain a ton of weight as a side-effect of whatever medication I will be prescribed. I also have a weird symptom I was wondering if anyone else had. I am never, ever thirsty. I can't stand drinking fluids. It doesn't matter how hot or dry the day is, I have to force myself to drink. Also, even though I force myself to drink fluids sometimes, when I do I don't have to urinate. I urinate very infrequently, even when I've been drinking lots of fluids. When my bladder is full, it doesn't feel the way it used to. My entire back and stomach area just kind of aches and feels full. I also have absolutely no libido whatsoever. (The excess hair, low libido, lack of thirst and back pains all started about 6 years ago, when I was 25.) Between the lovely body hair and no sex drive whatsoever, I don't know how my husband can stand me. Does anyone else have those symptoms? I'd like to hear from anyone whose experiences have been similar or whose children's experiences are similar. Thanks.
Jen
