Barbara, I took the Dex with my second child. I was coaxed into the Dex by my genetic counselor, but by the time I found out I was pregnant and started the Dex, I was already 8 weeks pregnant. If I had started it in the very beginning of the pregnancy, we might have had better results. My daughter still required surgery, but she had a mild case of virilization, thanks to the Dex. I was told that there are no bad side effects on the baby if it is not found that the baby has CAH. As far as the amnio goes, they are done so often now, they have almost become a routine part of pregnacy. There is as risk of infection any time you introduce a foreign substance into your body, such as a needle. The real threat is infection when the needle penetrates the placenta. There is a small risk of actually touching the baby with the needle, but they do an ultrasound as they are doing the amnio so they can determine the baby's exact location. It doesn't hurt, you get a great surge of pressure at the site where they insert the needle. I had a very bad experience with the Dex. I gained a lot of weight, maybe 40 pounds or more. I developed a fat, moon like face, and awful striations, like stretch marks all the way down to my ankles. I was VERY moody and I had no energy at all. I would start crying or yelling and I had no clue where it was coming from. It has been almost 2 years since I have taken Dex, and I still have striations. They have faded some, but the ones on my calfs and around my middle are awful. I was told by my perinatologist, that it could take a few years for my body to balance itself out metabolically and hormonally. Because of my awful experience with Dex, I opted not to do it with my third child. I knew there was a 50% chance it would be a boy and a 75% chance it would not have CAH. I figured the odds were in my favor. I had a 2 year old and a one year old at home, and I knew if I took the Dex, I would not be capable of taking care of them. I needed to keep my strength and not have to deal with all the extra bloodwork and doctors visits for myself. Fortunately, my third was a boy, and he does not have CAH. I have a few articles on Dex therapy, if you want them, e-mail me. Good Luck.Nicole
