Nicole, I’m glad to hear that your children wear Medic Alert bracelets. My daughter has consistently worn hers for 11 years. I also think we need to break out of the idea of keeping CAH a secret. Even with this said, my gut reaction was the same as Lee’s. So I checked out the site and browsed it a bit. My initial conclusion is that nothing is for free. While there is no cost for membership, they make several requests of their members such as visiting the sight often, making it your premier health website, and voluntarily taking part in periodic market research surveys. As with anything, it is important to read the fine print. They do say that they will not sell any email id info. I am not sure if legally that includes your street address. I checked into becoming a member as far as I could without signing up and found that they do make several requests including your name, street address and email address. Being a singlemom, that is not something I part with easily. While you may not be paying any financial costs, I question how much privacy is given up when taking part in any market survey (even if it is a loss of psychological privacy). I’m a market surveyor’s worst nightmare. The site also appears somewhat consumer driven with its shopping online and ordering prescriptions online. As for its medical encyclopaedia, in my personal opinion, it did have basic valuable info........ BUT I couldn’t find any thing on CAH. (I searched adrenal, adrenal hyperplasia, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, CAH, even Addison’s and a few other assorted related topics without success.) I’m certainly not telling anyone what to do or not to do, but I hope that I have raised a few questions. Must be the teacher in me. When teaching media studies, I always get my students to look out for the underlying motives. Even though I am an eternal optimist, I always look out for the wolf in sheep’s clothing. Peg D. P.S.
