Re: Prenatal dexamethasone treatment for CAH

Hi, Andrea. I had also taken the dexamethasone at approx. 10 weeks. I was pregnant with our second child. My firstborn,a son, was diagnosed at 1 month of age with saltwasting CAH. Well anyway, about the side effects of this stuff. In my experience, I also gained more weight than my first and third pregnancy. I can't remember exactly how long I was taking it, probably about 1 month give or take a week. I can't say for sure if dexamethasone caused the numbness in my hands because I'm not sure about the timing, but I could not even hold a pen and write my name. My doctor at the time told me it was carpal tunnel. Another weird thing that happened when my daughter was born(I was taking the dex.)was that her nose was kinda crimped in the middle. It's hard to explain exactly what it looks like. Well anyway my husband had heard about a prayer request from someone who had to take dex. while she was pregnant and had said that it can causes deformation of the nose and lips. Now I wonder if that is what happened to my little girl. I don't doubt it because dexamethasone from what I have researched is a powerful drug with plenty of side effects, especially if taken for a long period of time and in even moderate dosages. Well sorry I've been long winded. I'm gonna go. If you or anyone else needs any other information on these subjects of CAH or Meds maybe I can help. Take care and God bless you. Oh by the way my second and third children (both girls) did not have CAH.
