Re: Slightly confused and prognosis for boys

OK, here's the scoop. Since my husband was one of the first to survive with this condition, he was a guinea pig of sorts. He was the 2nd infant treated at Duke University Hospital with CAH (salt wasting). Various doctors in different states tried different treatments over the years. At first, he had to have regular injections of cortisone. At one point, he had what they thought was an allergic reaction to the cortisone IM -- possibly it was caused by the suspension medium. He remembers switching to oral meds around first grade. He took them twice a day, morning and night. He took cortisone until he was around 13 then switched to prednisone. He still takes prednisone and has added florinef in recent years. He only goes to the endo once or twice a year. He played any and all sports while living in North Carolina, Kansas, and New Jersey. No problems. Broke his arm playing football and remembers maybe taking an extra dose of meds but nothing terrible happened. After that his parents wouldn't let him play more because he was small (20 percentile) rather than relating to the CAH. In high school he was a championship wrestler and played soccer. Never had any problems with either sport. Played soccer in college; football with the guys on the quad, etc. He recalls the suggestion that he take salt tablets when exercising outside but he didn't do it (he eats a lot of salty food). He doesn't know why you asked about sunburn. He's had a few mild cases but he tans easily (no fair!). He recalls something about low blood sugar when he was very young, but by the time he was in school, playing sports, etc. he never had any problems, except that sometimes when he hasn't eaten in a while he can feel his blood sugar drop and then we all have to get out of his way until he eats something! Don't know if that relates to CAH or not. ;) He is 5 ft 7 in now (his brother is over 6 feet). As far as I can tell, he has never lived life like he was sick in any way. He was probably a scrappy little kid that didn't take anything from anybody as far remarks about his size. Not that he got in fights, but he never let it get to him. He doesn't feel like he was singled out more than any other kid who was picked on for any reason. And like I said earlier, fertility was not an issue. Two kids in two tries. ;) Hope this info helps you all. Feel free to ask more questions if you have them, and I will pry the answers out of him.
