Re: Confusion

I just found this message board - wish it had been here 8 yrs ago. My daughter just turned 11. She also has a "mild" form of CAH. She was diagnosed at 3-1/2, even though I had asked repeatedly why she didn't appear completely normal (clitoris was enlarged). Maybe it is the fact that the rest of her body has grown, but the clitoris does not appear to be nearly as large and her doctor told me this would happen. My daughter takes both hydrocortone and florinef, even though she is not a classic salt waster. I can tell you that there have been some crises - but not many. Please continue to give your daughter her meds - this is critical! Also, if you haven't done so already, find out about injectable medication in the event that she becomes very ill. We have had to do this twice in 8 yrs. We should have done it one other time when she had a stomach virus, but didn't know, and somehow she got through that crisis. What is your daughter's bone age? Drs should be checking this regularly to help her attain the most height possible. With proper medication the drs can slow down the rapid advancement of the bone age and achieve more normal height. Also, always watch for signs of precocious puberty. This often accompanies CAH. We thought we saw mild signs at age 3-1/2, but bloodwork finally confirmed it at 5. I give my daughter a monthly injection of Pediatric Depot Lupron for this. Please write and let me know how your daughter is doing.
