Of the top of my head (not being a doctor), it seems to me that when you get your ear pierced you need to keep something in it in case it grows over. Wouldn't it be the same case? Could it be that the dilation process serves both as a means of keeping the opening from reclosing as well as minimizing the amount and severity of surgery later on?
