Re: prenatal dexamethasone

WOW. I'm impressed. I'm impressed you declined an amniocentesis...and I'm impressed you are a strong enough person to even plan to have the baby at home. I have done a lot of research on CAH (my 5-yr-old daughter has CAH) and I don't remember anything specific about difficulties at birth. Since you are prepared to have the baby tested as soon as possible after it is born and are aware of the condition, then you're already way ahead of some of us, aren't you? Most states don't test for CAH as part of the Newborn Screening, and we didn't know to test for it on our own when our kids were born. The dexamethasone should reduce some of the physical manifestations of this disorder, particularly if your baby is a girl. However, I'm sure you've read enough to know that it doesn't reduce the disorder, itself. It sounds like you're prepared and informed. I applaud your resolve. Please don't be "scaremongered by medical staff"....you're doing something more of us should do.......dare to defy what "the doctors" tell us to do....many times their advice is simply to make things easier/less "sueable" for them. I've been told by family/friends that maybe we shouldn't have any more children because of the chances of having another CAH child. Oh, brother....the human race would not have gotten very far with that reasoning! We're not planning any more kids (we have two) simply because my husband feels old! However, if we did become pregnant, I would go the midwife route versus the doctors, even with the whole CAH thing. (I wouldn't be brave enough to have the baby at home, though!) Good luck to you...I'm excited for you....our prayers are with you!
