My CAH daughter attends public school. I was interested in your thoughts on homeschooling, however, as last year I pulled my son out of public school and started teaching him at home. He has special education concerns that weren't being addressed properly and I got tired of fighting and begging and watching him fall behind. It's comforting when I hear successful homeschool stories. Last year was pretty unstructured and scarey for me... this year should be better. My 8 year old CAH daughter has asked about homeschooling, but I personally think she wouldn't like being away from all the other kids. (Also, I need to get more comfortable with it myself. I still don't have all the confidence I need.) In our town, the school nurse divides her time between three schools so she is not always available for my child. I get around this by briefly explaining to the teachers that my daughter has a medical condition and that I should be notified if she complains of headaches, stomache-aches, etc... This has worked well for us. Also, whenever the class goes on a field trip or leaves the school for any reason, the nurse (equipped with medications) goes too. We've never had an emergency situation occur at school; but she does wear a Medic Alert bracelet and I live close by so I could get there quickly if I had to. I try not to let fear of her medical condition hold me back from letting her have a "normal" life. And going to school is a pretty normal part of growing up. I definately agree that homeschooling is terrific, but I don't know that I would base that decision specifically on medical reasons. Our daughter plays on a basketball team and a soccer team. She's a speed demon on wheels - be it a bike or a pair of roller blades. We're cautious, but we want her to participate in anything that we would've allowed even if she didn't have CAH.Laurie
