Re: Bone age x-rays

I am an x-ray technologist and instructor for Radiology. I have been in the field since 1980. When a doctor states that they do not want to expose the child to x-rays, ask them what is the risk vs benefit? If you fall and hurt your arm, would they not x-ray the arm to see if your arm is broken and need mending? A bone age requires a minimum of one x-ray (the PA hand to include the wrist). If the x-ray technologist "Collimates" the x-ray field, then only the hand is being exposed. (All individuals can see collimation when the technologist turns on the "light-on". Where the light is so shall the x-rays be!) And, ask for a lead shield for both you and your child. I hope I have given you confidence in persuing the concepts that x-rays are to help with diagnosis and treatment. X-rays are not the enemy. And, with proper radiation protection to the patient, very minor exposure is given to the child. Sincerly, Kimberly
