Re: Cognitive abilities & Social Behavior in female with CAH

My daughter just turned 9 years old. She has never liked typical "girl" toys and 99% of her friends at school are boys. She does not have a problem getting along with girls - she just doesn't like to play the same games or with the same toys that most of them prefer, so she hangs out with "the guys" who are more into the things that she likes. While she is invited to many parties given by her female classmates, she is usually the only girl invited to the boys' parties. She wouldn't touch a barbie doll if you paid her. Wearing a dress is traumatic. I have often questioned the endo about this; asking if the early exposure to so much testosterone during her devolpment was a cause of this. The endo inists that my daughter would've been this way with or without CAH and that the early exposure to testosterone has nothing to do with her preference for "boy" things. I have my doubts on this theory and do believe that CAH definately plays a part. But I don't mind it in the least. I question it only out of curiosity, not because I am bothered by it. My daughter is very outgoing and fun to be around. She is a very happy and socially well adjusted child. Educationally, she does do well with both Science and Math. Math is her favorite subject (after phys. ed., of course!) and she enjoys playing the math games on our computer. She even has math workbooks that we saw in a store one day and she wanted to buy them to use at home. She had a strong interest in science also. Don't know if this is related to CAH, but I have also read that this could be related. On a final note, my daughter is not - and never has been - overweight. If anything, she's on the small side... a trait that is not uncommon in our families.
