Re: Cognitive abilities & Social Behavior in female with CAH

Carla, My daughter is 2 1/2 and I read all those articles about behavior. It is hard to know what to believe with the availability of info nowadays, but I can tell you a few things about my experience with a CAH girl. My daughter is the middle child. My other 2 are boys, so you can imagine that the dolls and barbies are out numbered by the cars and trucks in our playroom. Our families send lots of toys, and she naturally plays with whatever her 2 brothers are playing with, usually cars and trucks. However, when she is alone, she loves her Cabbage Patch baby and stroller, she is very nuturing and needy emotionally, a real snugglebunny and daddy's little princess. She loves to wear my make-up, put clips in her hair, and paint her nails. She is thin and petite, with very feminine features and mannerisms. She also has an older step-brother, so the female role model (me) is outnumbered by the male role models in our home. It is true that children are a product of their environment. If you never introduced barbie to your little girl, and only let her play with cars, she would prefer to play with cars. We as a society are the ones hung up on sterotyping girls as having to wear pink, play with dolls, and enjoy tea parties. And I for one like it that way, because I would like for my daughter to be feminine and sweet and all the things girls are supposed to be. Please don't listen too much to those studies. There may be some validity in there somewhere, but all you can do is offer as many choices to your granddaughter as possible, and let her be herself and develop her own self and personality. On another note, my daughter did have some vagina/urethra blockage when she was born, and she would vomit every time she ate. We went through this for months until her surgery, so feel free to e-mail me (mosawe@yahoo.com) if you need more info. We have been through alot and have come a long way. Good Luck!!!
