Help! My almost 10 month old son was diagnosed on 9/17 with constipation. Fruit juice started; didn't clear consipation. Ear infection diagnosed on 9/22. Aumentin wwas started; we had 8 days of that. He was still not eating 33 ounces a day of fluid (I even tried dumping it in cereal, which he would eat, but he would not drink)On 9/30 E/R diagnosed slight dehydration and persistent ear infection. Strong antibiotic given with an I.V. Bolis. He then consumed 36 ounces of fluid the next day. On 10/2, he consumed only 15 1/2 ounces. Took him to E/R. Their hypotheses, because they say he "looks good" was that 1) he was hydrated enough, didn't want to drink), and/or 2)Ear infection causing pain; wouldn't suck. They tried to give him pedialyte and fruit juice; wouldn't take either. They couldn't find a vien to stick him, so Dr. Rudeness came in, asking, "So, you want us to stick him again?" Not really, Dr. Rudeness. So, he says, give him an NG (nasal tube). I ask, will this cause "stress?" Have to explain that he has CAH, salt losing, could Bolis on 9/30 be responsible since it contains sodium chloride, and his Florinef was decreased a month ago? Then, Dr. does stick him, gives NG (4 ounces). Then says, to alternate pain medication (Tylenol) with Motrin, every 6 hours, and give him only cold things to drink. HA! This did not work. He did eat 8 ounces formula IN cereal, though. I can't MAKE him drink, he won't take a cup, he doesn't eat unless I force him to (goes from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., without fussing for a bottle)Since he needs to stay well hydrated, what do we do? We are to call the endo tomorrow afternoon, to discuss these things. His BiCarb went from 17 to 18 (range is 22-25) Sodium is at 141, also o.k., so Dr. thinks he is getting better. He is on 1.5 mg Florinef daily, and 1 ml a.m., 1.5 ml afternoon and 1.5 ml p.m. dosage of Cortef. Any suggestions? Anyone have this problem? His soft spot is down, but they say this is the LAST thing to appear when dehydrated (he has scant tears to me, but o.k. to them, and moist mouth). The pediatrician thought the bolis might make him feel better, and he would start eating, and drinking better. Anything we are overlooking? Oh, another theory was that he was "too busy" to eat, and that he lost weight (about a pound since 9/8) due to his crawling. I am so frustrated. I don't want to wait for him to crash; he had two episodes of diarrhea over the past two days; we stressed dosed him for those, and are stress dosing him today per E/R contact with endo. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? Please reply. Thanks for reading this long post.Jennifer C
