Elliot's Trip to the hospital due to diarrhea
10/5/99 0:20 AM
Elliott has a slight fever now but the diarrhea is slowed down. On Thursday, day 8 of his diarrhea, he had a crises. We picked him up from daycare while between closing on our old home and closing on our new home because he vomited once. He seemed alert and responsive, but Michele (my wife)took him into the doctor (doctor on call in his pediatric group) anyway. He threw up again on the way to the second closing and had another diarrhea. After closing on our new home we went to a hotel. At the hotel, he had two more diarrhea. He then threw up. I immediately triple dosed him. I called his pediatrician while Michele left a message with his endo doctor. The on-call pediatrician said to give him an antivomit suppository and to watch him closely. We hung up quickly and talked to his endo doctor. He said to go right to the hospital. By the time we got to the hospital, Elliott was unconscious. Michele immediately gave the emergency solucortef at the hospital. He did not move at all and his eyes were turned back. I ran to get a nurse. She hit at his chest three times with no response. She called a code blue and in 10 seconds there were 6 nurses and his endo at his side. They were giving him oxygen, hooked him up to the heart monitor and starting an IV. Talk about scary!!!!! The emergency drug started to work and he started to come to. They kept him on IV fluids for a day and he was discharged at 3:00 PM. It is scary to think what may have happened if we did not have this knowledge learned through the MAGIC foundation and this message board and had followed the pediatric doctors advice. Thank you everyone for your advice and concerns! Thomas E. Harrington
