My salt-waster was 10 days old when he was diagnosed. At birth, his penis was large for age. The doctor joked about charging double for his circumcision. Ha! When he was ten days old, he slept all day, would not take a bottle or breast feed, and hardly wet any diapers. He was very lethargic and breathing a little funny when we finally decided to take him into the hospital. No body knew what was wrong in our small community emergency department. The ED physician brought in a pediatrician who did chest x-rays and found a partially collapsed lung. A surgeon was brought in for a chest tube. They finally, after an hour or so, were able to start an IV. They couldn't get blood because he was so dehydrated. Finally, a pediatric unit was brought up from a large hospital and he was transported to NICU where an endocrinologist happened to see his penis and ordered tests. We were told that we got him in just in time. If we had waited until morning, our son would have been gone. So, yes, a child can be diagnosed very early. No, he has not had any pubic hair. He is a very happy and very good natured child considering all that he has been through. Tina
