Breastfeeding

How many of you exclusively breastfeed or fed your CAH babies? The reason I ask is because I am a certified lactation consultant and strongly believe in the many health benefits breastmilk gives to our children. When my twins were born at 33 wks, (I had a complication that required delivery) I began nursing them as soon as I was able. Just a couple of days after we went home, we got the call that the newborn screening had come back with CAH. During the ensuing months I continued to nurse my twins. At each endo visit, Kevins blood levels would move more toward normal. He is not a salt-waster. He continued to improve his levels with time and at about age 2.5 yrs we stopped all medication. We had only been giving Prelone with stress, temp >=102. Since that time, his levels have continued to be better each time. They still aren't anywhere near normal, but I'm thrilled by their progress. Kevin has never had a "crisis" and is now 4 years old and we don't do anything special for him at all. If he (or maybe I should say when!) gets a fracture or needs surgery for some reason, we will probably need to give him Prelone, but for ordinary illnesses and injuries, nothing. Now, I'm not saying that the breastfeeding cured him of CAH, but I do believe that it might very well have improved his situation. I know it helped his overall health. What do you think? And yes, I do know how very fortunate we are, especially after reading some of your posts. By the way, his twin sister has an Atrial Septal Defect, (hole in the heart) Those first few weeks home with preemie twins with these conditions was harrowing!
