Re: Stress Dose

I don't think excessive sleeping should be considered sufficient rationale for stress dosing your child. A "stress dose" generally implies an increase in the amount of cortef on the order of 2 to 3 times the regular dose. The body uses up cortisone very quickly in response to stress. What constitutes stress is a bit ambiguous, but usually the meaning is oriented towards physical stress, like breaking a bone, major surgery, etc. The dosages of the medications are pretty important. Occassional stress dosing of your child is not that big of a issue, but continious overdosing with cortef is a problem. Excessive cortef dosing could result in Cushing's disease like symptoms in your child. You should try and stick to a pretty regular protocol regarding dosages. Cortef is generally adjusted in proportion to body surface area changes. Other factors used to adjust cortef levels are blood test reults, bone age xrays and height/weight tracking. Good luck! Alan
