Was this a crisis?!?!
12/1/99 10:33 AM
Last night I noticed our 6 1/2 mo.old with CAH was lethargic and sleeping a lot. When I tried to awaken him...he was as limp as a ragdoll!! My husband kept trying while I called the endo. The endo said to give him a stress dose of hydrocortizone orally. (He is still reluctant to even teach us how to give the shot). Meanwhile...my husband was able to get the baby to open his eyes...he was still very weak, groggy, and out of it. About 15 minutes after the stress dose, he perked up and started to play more normally. We were horrified and relieved. We were told to try to get him to eat (in case glucose was low) and if we couldn't get food in him, to take him to the emergency room. The endo then said his lab work last week showed his 17-hydroxyprogesterone (sp?) levels were up to 4000 (he tries to keep them at 250!!). Needless to say, we didn't sleep last night. Within the past 2 weeks, our son has - possibly been exposed to chicken pox and gotten the "shot" from his pediatrician. - had a bout of pneumonia (without fever) and been on antibiotics for 10 days. (Can CAH or CAH meds MASK Fevers?) - and been around our 7 yr old who had a 104 degree temp with a stomach virus. - started rubbing his right ear but showed not sign of ear infection or fever at his checkup last week. He has an apt today with his pediatrician and an endo apt on Friday. We're exhausted and confused...can anyone give us some advice? Sorry so long, but we're new to all this and wanted to give you all the details. Thanks much in advance, Marla
