From what I have heard, replacement hormones do wonders (although depending on your medical history there can be some risks). I am in no way an expert on this (no medical background and no experience with menopause) but I think it has to do with lower levels of estrogen. I better stop saying anything on this because I am way beyond my knowledge base. Maybe someone else can fill in. Personally, I lost all intelligence with my first child so I am not so concerned with that affect of menopause :)
