I have an 18 mo. old son who has CAH (salt wasting). He is my first, so I don't have anyone to compare him to but. . . he was an extremely fussy baby. The only two things that seemed to give him any comfort were nursing and wearing him in a baby sling. He constantly wanted to eat and seemed to get upset stomachs easily. We tried Mylecon drops for gas and that seemed to help quite a bit. It was a very rough first 6 months but I am so glad I hung in there with him and responded as best I could to his cries. He is now an absolute joy and has a very good disposition. I can't believe my little independent 18 mo. old is the same baby who I could never (and I mean never) put down just a year ago. I don't know if it was the CAH, the Cortef (upset stomach), or colic, but it has gotten so much better. As far as the susceptability to illness goes, we have been very lucky. He has been incredibly healthy - just a few colds and 1 fever. Last week we had our first scare. He had a bad cough and I took him to the dr. He had a start on pneumonia. I gave him tylenol right away for the fever, we increased his Cortef dose for 48 hours, and put him on antibiotics immediately. He perked up within a few hours and was good as new by the next afternoon. I would say he is "healthier" than most of the other little kids I know. I am kind of a worrier and now I look back on those first months and wish I had just enjoyed him more and worried less. With treatment and a little extra vigilance I think CAH kids thrive.Chris D
