CAH is caused by a recessive gene - and there is genetic testing because it is important later on if she/he wants to have children of their own so she can see if her partner is a carrier or is affected by CAH; or if the parents of a CAH child (you)want to other children. It is true both parents have to have the gene to pass it on (25% chance that their children will have CAH). My husband and I are carriers of CAH (we carry the gene but are not affect or have CAH) and our CAH children are affected or have CAH. There are state and federal medical assistance programs that paid for low income people to get medical treatment and testing through social services and many hospitals provide information or payment plans. I live in Virginia but the blood samples for the genetic tested was send to Dr. Maria New's office for genetic testing. I was told that Dr. Maria New's lab is the only one in the US (besides one in Texas) that can do genetic testing for CAH. The took blood from me, my husband, and our CAH child. This is important because we wanted another child. Since we were both carriers - I took Dex (steriods) while pregnant with our second child (25% chance that the child would have CAH).... then I amnio and it was also tested genetical for CAH. She had CAH and so the Dex treatment stopped her from needing surgery. The testing is very important. Also is the testing for CAH - is is OH17 (hormonal testing), plasma renin, and chem 7 (salt, sugar, etc). In some states it is manatory test all newborns for CAH (Virginia does not - my 1st CAH son almost died because we did not know he had CAH). The OH17 test needs to be done between 6 and 8am without the morning cortisol (steriod meds) because of the hormonal surges. The salt levels and plasma renin can be taken anytime (except while sleeping). preston@kreative.net
