yours is a story so familiar to me...My baby was born 11-1-99 at our local hospital..While I was pregnant I had three ultrasounds each telling me I was to have a girl..Well the day came for my baby to be born, "it's a girl" they tell me..with what they thought was swollen genitals, so on we went giving her the name of Emily and telling all our friends and family of our precious gift..That evening the pediatrition came into my room examened my baby and was immediately set back by the genitalia..He then went on to tell me that my child is neither a girl or a boy, but a baby with ambigious genitalia and further test would need to be done...The next morning My baby and I were sent to a Larger Hospital an hour away to see specialist...The endocrinoligist there sat us down and told us that at this time they cannon assign a sex..An ultrasound was done that showed the baby had no uterous, but I was told it could still be a girl who would then never reproduce..A sonogram was done to determine wether the lumps in the genitals were ovaries or testicls, they were found to be Testicles, but could still be dropped ovaries. My baby was placed in there NICU unit for monitoring, and by this time I was a complete wreck..More test were done and sent out to California, although results would be held off for two weeks because of the distance they had to go.. The Endo had a chromosone test done and two days after that the test came back showing y chromosones.. (Boy).. although at this time we could still not give a name to our baby because if the other test came back showing that our baby could not function with male hormones then we would have to make our baby a girl who would never reproduce and may have manly traits...My baby had to be called Baby Miller, and this is after my local hospital had declared her a girl and sent the paperwork off for a birth certificate and ss card..Well after a week in the hospital they let me take my baby home with strict instructions to follow pertaining to daily bloodwork checks and daily weight checks..So home with the baby now My 3 year old son wants to know if he has a sister or a brother, we have to tell him we dont know yet and to call they baby "baby" for now..Another week had to go by before we could expect any results..during this time I did everything to try to find info about this..Everything that I found told me there were no boys born with genital malformation and all malformation was found in girls..Which led me to believe that I had a girl, although a girl without a uterous and dropped ovaries...Meanwhile we now have to begin to answer questions from those who say "oh what a beautiful baby is it a boy or a girl" imagine there suprise when we would say "We don't know yet" Life as we knew it had been so totally lost..and confusing..Finally after two very Long weeks the Endo had called to let us know that our baby was infact a Boy..born with the salt waisting form of CAH.. 3-beta...We immediately started meds, and began the new task of researching exactly what we needed to know...Today my baby boy Jacob is up to 9lbs 14 1/2 oz. and presently doing good... He goes for weekly bloodwork and bi-weekly pediatrition visits. As well as endo visits. Last week I received a birth certificate for my "daughter emily" I also feel as though I've lost a daughter..Changing the birth certificate was painless although then the social security card came, that has been an up-hill battle..I have had to provide medical proof that the baby is infact a boy.."like I would just make this up" The stress this has all caused is very overwhelming..Yesterday he received his first set of immunizations and luckily there has been no fever from these. And today we go again for bloodwork..I am just so thankfull that god placed his hand upon my baby and gave him some outward signs that could notify doctors of this disease, In New York where I am CAH is not presently tested for with the newborn screening test, and I feel that without his outward genital problems we would have lost him..He has to have corrective surgeries when he is a year old. presently he has a seperated scrotal sack, and his penis is attached in the middle of his sack, he also cannot urinate through his penis he has a little whole just at the bottom of his scrotal sack in which he pees through..They tell me surgery should go very simple, reattach his scrotal sack, unattach his penis and pull his urethra to the tip of it..I am so worried about him constantly, but as the days go on dealing with this has become a bit easier, I would never want to go through those first three weeks again..Still waiting for new Social security card, and still explainig his condition to every tom dick and harry..Although we have simplified it to say that he has a sodium disorder, and we leave the rest out about corrective surgery, people can be very cruel and we don't want him to ever doubt himself...All in all these last two months have certainly been interesting... hope i haven't rambled on to much...Hope things are okay for you...If you would like to chat more feel free to e-mail me...Anna
