Dear Regula, I am a 40 yr old with late onset non-salt wasting CAH. There is a possibility of non-saltwasters going into crisis because I have twice in the last few years (one in 93 and one in 96 and one averted in 1999) All of them required hospitalizations (the first 2 for 4 days each). The problem as I see it is that after being on steroids for a long time (I've been on Dexamethasone for 20 years) your adrenals are put to sleep and according to my last Cortrosyn Stimulation test my adrenals are now TOTALLY suppressed . They have 0 function. Thats something that I think people should know, particularly folks with late-onset who think a crisis isn't possible. The right ingredients for me were a divorce and single-parenthood and not taking my Dex on a regular basis. In other words, lots of stress. The second one I had had more to do with physical stress (too much exercise) and a dosage (.25) that was too low (I WAS taking it on a regular basis!. So, it can happen and I now carry extra Dexamethasone with me at all times as well as solucortef and a syringe. Take care. Susan A.Susan A.
