Re: 7 year old boy and 3 year old girl with CAH

Hi Dawn, I have an almost 14 year old boy and an 8 year old girl with CAH non salt wasting. The weight thing had always been an issue for my son. Some docs said it was the meds, some said it was his metabolism. My son is in puberty now and quite active athletically. He will never be pencil thin but he looks great now. He does watch what he eats but I wouldn't say he is restricted in any way. My current cause for concern and why I connected with the board is his height potential. We received word last Friday from the endo who has been treating him that he will probably reach an adult height of 5'4". He was less than thrilled since basketball is his passion. Things could have been worse, I know but I am still looking for some hope that we can get him a few more inches. Never give up hope. My daughter, by the way has never had weight issues. She is thin. However, she is on prednisolone because she metabolizes hydrocortisone too quickly. My husband and I are thin and active. There are family members who are overweight in both of our families. We have never really gotten a straight answer on the cause. It seems to be a combo of both genetics and steroids. Sorry to be so long-winded. My advice is not too many sweets and stay active. It's very hard when all their friends can eat whatever they want and not gain an ounce but it's worth the effort. I tried good healthy eating during the week combined with physical activity and then a special treat on the weekend. They are just kids, we can't completely deprive them. Good luck and welcome! Liz
