Our son is almost 9 months old and has CAH. He goes to daycare and seems to catch the latest cold/virus every other week. He had pneumonia 3 months ago. The flu last month and a virus this month. The flu caused an adrenal crisis. When these episodes occur, we are told to give oral stress doses on alternating days. Our son's weight and growth have stunted because of the extra hydrocortisone. Has anyone else experienced this? He went from off the charts for weight down to about 40% and from 75-25% for height! This week on the way to the pediatrician he began to gag and choke on his own mucus. Luckily my 8 year old saw his distress, terrified I came to his aid, and we rushed him straight to the Childrens Hospital ER in Boston. The chest X-Ray showed no pneumonia. They ran tests... glucose fine, electolytes fine..and sent us home with only a prescription for a humidifier saying to call an ambulance if it happened again. (The choking episode and adrenal crisis have horrified us so the baby sleeps with my husband and me because we want to keep eye on him as he sleeps. He seems to awaken every 20-30 minutes or so to nurse for a minute or so. Safe to say we're exhausted.) The ER's instructions were unacceptable to us and we saw his regular pediatrician yesterday. She gave us a nebulizer but then shocked us by revealing that his chest X-Ray from the ER the day before showed problems with the baby's bone development!! She and the baby's endo are concerned that his legs may bow once he starts walking. They think it's probably not Rickets, but a possible lack of vitamin D absorption due to steriods. Has anyone ever heard of this? She said breastfed babies of color in temperate climates often have this condition as well. She recommends muitivitamin supplements and 20 minutes of sunlight per day for the baby. With wind chill it's sub-zero in Boston and we don't how we're going to do this... Lastly, the pediatrician recommends we look into acupuncture and herbal remedies like ecinachea (sp?) rather than give him more and more prescriptions. She's doing research to determine any possible negative interactions with the Cortef, Florinef or Sodium Chloride. Can anyone comment on acupuncture's ability to stimulate hormone production of the adrenal gland, stunted growth issues, boosting CAH kids' immune system and how to live cope as parents with exhaustion and just wanting to seeing your child happy and healthy...
