Marla, I read your message with great interest. My daughter who is 2 1/2 has been attending day care 2-3 days per week since she was seven months old. Since then we have been on a never ending round of cold's , sore throats, coughs, pneumonia, ear infections, everything. We have had numerous adrenal crisis's and trips to the E.R. She has had antibiotics, nebulisers, phsiotherapy, and she seemed to improve for a couple of days, sometimes weeks then she would crash again. Finally in desperation I demanded a referral to a Ear,Nose and Throat pediatric specialist and have got an answer. He seems to think that she has a condition called Obstructive Sleep Disorder. This condition, due to obstruction of the upper airway (nose/adenoids and tonsils), has varying degrees of severity from mild snoring through to severe obstruction with growth failure and cardiac complaints. The obstruction can be due to either blockage of the nose, enlarged adenoids or enlarged tonsils or in my daughters case a combination of all three. This disorder in my childs case is caused by an allergy, possibly something at daycare or it could be pollen, or milk who knows, but it cause's the inflammation of the tonsils, chest congestion, coughing and nasal congestion etc. Other symptoms of this disorder or inflammation, are heavy sweating (especially at night), restless sleep, periods of apnoea (breath holding), frequent waking, tired and grumpy in the mornings (our particular favourite), difficulty swallowing meat and lumpy foods, underweight for age, and being hyperactive during the day. As a result of this visit my daughter is now scheduled to have her tonsils and adenoids removed and sinus's flushed which will alleviate her immediate problems and then once she turns 3 they will conduct the allery testing by blood and skin tests. In the meantime I have been using an antihistamine called Claratyne to ease the congestion, plus multivitamins. It does appear to be of some benefit. The rattle in her chest has eased and she is a happier girl. My apologies if this message is somewhat long but I can really understand your frustration and concerns, especially when your child is continually ill and there seems no end. Maybe the above will be of some help to you, it is most certainly the cause of my childs problems but it has taken me 18 months to get the medical profession to take my childs illness's seriously and not treat me like a neurotic mother. If I can be of any help email me karen@wn.com.au Take care Karen
