Re: Holiday abroad-advice please

We're a military family and have travelled extensively (I could say CONSTANTLY but that just sounds like whining). Most peds endo's know many others in different locales--have you asked your doc for recommendations? When we travel, we always carry LOTS of extra cortef and florinef, in separate bags in case of breakage, lost luggage, etc. I also carry all the usual emergency standards, solu-cortef, etc on my person all the time. Karen is very prone to adrenal crisis. We've been fortunate to have had only one serious episode while traveling-and that occurred (after a month of solid travelling) on the day we arrived at our new housing here in Washington State. So I called our new doctor (sight unseen but we had spoken by phone before the move) and followed his instructions. Even while you're on the Continent, you can have phone contact with your daughter's peds endo. It's a good idea to carry some kind of synopsis of her health record (we carry her whole file with us) in case there's a problem. Definitely your doc's phone number and her latest prescription details--both the name brand "cortef" and the pharmaceutical name, to help foreign docs understand. Our daughter has a MedicAlert insignia, but we also carry cards in our wallets describing which child she is and that she is corticosteroid dependent, on the off chance of a terrible accident where we are incapacitated and her medallion flies off. Also a medical consent form. You can also figure out, according to your travel itinerary, where the nearest hospitals are likely to be. If you feel it's appropriate, you could even get their emergency phone numbers and carry them with you. "If ye are prepared, ye shall not fear." Having said all that, remember--you probably won't have any problems! so by doing a little preparation before the trip, you can relax and just have fun together.
