Jenni, first, congratulations! having two children so close in age may seem overwhelming at first but by the time they're 3 and 4 you will be glad you did. How exciting! I was on dexamethasone with one of my daughters. Started dex at 8 wks, expected to have results and discontinue by 15 weeks. We did the CVS right at 11 1/2 weeks, but there were repeated problems with the testing process and I ended up being on the dex for 6 months instead of 6 weeks. My daughter was not CAH. My doctor at the time told me that the dex would give an affected female better than 50% chance of avoiding ambiguous genitalia (which her sister had). He also said that there were no reported side effects to an unaffected fetus. Since then I've heard varying success rates for dexamethasone. While there is no apparent problem for unaffected females exposed to dex in the womb, that only applies to immediately after birth. No one has studied the long-term effects to the child, such as infertility, cancers, etc--the treatment is simply too new, and they have to wait for our daughters to grow up. My side effects: weight gain (80+ lb), swollen limbs, acne everywhere (even my ankles), facial hair, aching joints. I regret taking it, but I saw it as a sacrifice for my daughter's health. But in my next pregnancy I elected not to take dex. My doctor supported me completely in that decision. There are some excellent web sites that can help you get a better idea of the success rates of dex, so that you can make the right choice for you.laurie
