Re: SECOND CHILD

RIE: My husband and I have talked many times about having another child. Not an easy thing. I have a two and a half year daughter with CAH. I don't think it is much different than having a boy with CAH. The only difference I see is having the corrective surgery done. And if I am mistaken there are some boys that have had some genital problems too. Maybe someone else reading this can clarify. The surgery was a terrible thing to see her go through. They usually do this surgery in the infant age. This helps the child psychologically later in life. Instead of "fixing" her problem later when classmates would ask the reason for time off, what kind of surgery, ect. There are several advantages of an early surgery. Some do not have it till later. At puberty. That is the way they used to do it until the technology improved. I chose to have her do it when she was 6 months old. It was 100 times harder on me and my husband than her. To see your child go through anything is hard. But we had an excellent pain management doc. He gave her what they call a caudal block. It is VERY similar to an epideral. I attribute her speedy recovery to this device. She had it for two days. In those two days she ate and slept almost like normal. It gave her body the rest it needed to heal without being drugged. She healed perfectly normal. She obviously doesn't remembert a thing. I have decided if I were to have another child I would not use the dex. to prevent the ambiguious genitalia. Others may say they used it and were fine. That is fine. But I have chosen not to because I don't like the side effects that COULD happen to the mother. And I feel I have to be healthy for the child I already have, let alone for the child that I would be having. AGAIN THESE ARE MY THOUGHTS. I believe if you can go through one child with this disease, it isn't much different except the surgery or taking the dex..If you do take the dex., and it is a boy you can stop taking it after they find out the sex. So you have to weigh the good with the bad. I know there are some on this board who have taken or their wives have taken the dex. They will probably be posting their message soon about it. My advice? Pray on it. Good luck.
