I have the information sheet in front of me that the doctor gave me. It says: 1. What is a "Caudal Block" A caudal block is a single shot of numbing medicine that is placed at the lowest, or caudal, section of the spine. The nerves that carrying pain then numbed or blocked. The block is placed by the anesthesiologist using expert technique to stop the feeling of pain below the level of the waist. 2. Why use a Caudal Block? Children with a caudal block need only have light anesthesia to keep them asleep, so they are less groggy and have lasting pain relief after surgery. Some pain may be felt after the child wakes up. Your doctor will talk with you about the use of pain relief medicine at home. 3. Side Effects You MAY See: - Difficulty passing urine. Your child must urinate before going home and you should make sure he is passing urine at home. ( My daughter had a catheter in for a week so this did not effect her) -Leg weakness. The child will not be aware of any weakness, so she will need to be watched when standing or walking to prevent a fall. (My daughter was 6 months old so that did not effect her either. Besides she was rolling around her crib at the hospital like NOTHING was wrong. Again every situation is different and maybe this is not for everyone. That is why I urge everyone to discuss this with their surgeon, endocrologist, ect. But once again it was Awesome for my daughter.) It also states these side effects should be gone within 6-8 hours as the caudal nerve block wears off. A small bruise on the lower back may be seen for a few days. I want to add too, that they put my daughter under THEN had the caudal block inserted. So she never felt any pain when they inserted it. That was my worry that she could not stay still. That made me feel alot better, so remember to ask about that too. This information was given to me by Childrens Hospital of Akron. It was a Patient Care sheet given to me for her release. I hope this helps, you are on my calendar Eileen. I will be praying for you guys.Laura
