Hi! I need an opinion, please. My husband and I have 2 daughters, aged 2 and 4 years, both with severe salt wasting 21 hydroxylase deficiency. My husband's cousin has a 4 month old baby boy. She called me last night to see if I had any thoughts on what might be wrong with him. Here are his symptoms: diarrhea, poor feeding (2 ounces a feeding, every 4-5 hours), irritable, weight loss. His doctor tested him for Rotavirus which came back negative. He is offering her no other suggestions and is basically leaving it at that. I told her that since we have a family history of CAH she should insist that his 17-OHP levels be checked and if those are high, they do further testing to confirm the CAH. I was very gentle with her but very firm that CAH is very serious but easily managed. I offered to go to the doctor with her, or to help in anyway she felt could help. We were told at a lecture last weekend that a boy with non-salt wasting CAH can go for months without an adrenal crisis. She is very young (19) and unmarried and I think very scared. She said she sees no need for the doctor to run this test. Please give me any advice you can on this matter, I would really appreciate it. I would hate to see something happen to him and if nothing else, it would rule out CAH since they live in Ohio which does not do newborn screening. I hope I did not leave anything out.
