My 11 year old daughter was always solid and never skinny, but after fourth grade (and her last CAH related operation) she has steadily gained weight. She is not obese but she is definitely chubby! She does eat some "junk"at school, which I cannot control, but she eats much less than most of her skinny friends. She is moderately active - karate four sessions a week, bike riding, gym five days a week, walking home a mile and a half, etc. ... This isn't just a girl thing, though. My five year old son now is chunking up, and he seldom gets through a half cup of cereal for breakfast or through his half a PBJ for lunch. He gets a snack of an apple or a Nutra-grain bar at school, and eats a small dinner,as well. He is also a CAH kid, who is about 42" high and almost fifty pounds! His non-CAH brother is tall (off the charts) and underweight for his height. When I started cortisone inhalents for asthma, I gained 15 pounds without changing my life-style. After being off of the drug for a month or so, the weight came off. When I had to go back on the weight came back. I suspect that some people, and maybe some families are more sensitive to cortisone than others. Either way, I have heard from many people who have girls with CAH and weight problems. I hope one of the NIH studies can provide us an alternative to pure steroid replacement in our kids.Elizabeth
