Cortef can stimulate the appetite--especially if one 's dosage is maybe a bit more than needed. It was a definite struggle to keep the weight off my daughter especially when she had one ear infection or sinus infection after the other and we were stress dosing. It's a real balancing act. As several others mentioned that their children were solid... the same can be said of my daughter. Finally when my she was switched to prednisone at age 13, we began to see some gradual weight loss. Also for a short while, she followed the Weight Watchers diet (for teens). It certainly made her far more aware of the foods to stay away from and also the ones to limit. My daughter is also very active in sports and that has helped. As I recall clothes buying was a problem... I just tried to find her clothes that still made her look good and were comfortable (she hated anything that buttoned at the waist). I tried not to make the weight thing into a huge problem---I know kids at school can be cruel so we always listened and made teachers aware before things got out of hand. Find activities your child enjoys ... it will bolster their self esteem and give them a positive focus. Even though I tried not to make the weight issue the focus, I controlled what I could...I can tell you that ice cream was a rare commodity in the fridge and I kept no candy in the house. Popcorn was the usual junk food snack. Lunches has lots of vegies etc. Where I did go a bit wrong was in the amount of cheese and milk that was consumed.(way too much) Enlist the help of a dietician if you can. They usually have great ideas. We often saw a dietitian right after the endo visit. My daughter loved her and it was usually the high point of the day - right after the blood tests.
