It is true that high doses of steroids can cause Cushinoid symptoms. My son developed this during his recent crisis when we were "overdosing" him for about a month. He was as skinny as they get just prior and then "plumped up" everywhere. He also became stocky and muscular in his legs and arms. His face became somewhat moon shaped which is a major sign of Cushings Syndrome. He also became a bit chubby in the tummy and butt. The trade off is clearly worth it, but as I have stated before, we need better alternatives for these sweet little angels! My son never seems to crave milk. I constantly have to plea with him to drink it or give him cereal with milk. He craves soda with a high sodium content. He does take Ovaltine in the morning as well as taking his meds with milk. After hearing this I will have to push harder. Ice cream has never been a problem though. I guess any way we can do it is better than none at all. Has anyone asked their ped about giving them Tums?
