Re: sports and CAH

Let her go for it. Don't let CAH stand in your way, deal with any CAH related problems as they arise, and who knows, they may not arise at all. I think it's great that CAH children can be so active and participate in sports at all levels. She sounds very enthusiastic and very talented. The only topic that may arise in the future, if she gets to an elite level, is her steroid dose. In Australia recently, a professional Rugby League footballer was suspended from the competition for taking an illegal drug. He has a medical condition that is related to CAH (I'm not sure what it is) and must take cortisone (steroids) for his condition. During routine drug testing of all players, his results came back positive and he was banned from the competition. He took the matter to Court and won, of course. But there was quite a bit of debate about it at the time, and this got us thinking about what happens if our daughter reaches an elite level in her particular sport. I know that the medication they take is only supposed to replace what they would normally produce themselves, but their levels will not always be exact all the time. Drugs in sport is a fairly hot issue at the moment, particularly with the Olympics coming up, and this is just another issue for CAH people to contend with, if the issue arises. Jenni.
