Re: Gender Issue...

Please let me start by saying how sorry I am that you received such an attachment. Some people are very sick. I also want to say that you obviously are a wonderful mother if you are trying so desperately to make sure that you except your son for who he is regardless if you approve. The one thing that I have heard a few times is the immorality of being gay. I am not an extremely religious person but I am a practicing Catholic and grew up in a very strict Catholic enviornment. I was always taught that it was wrong. I however, have a very difficult time believing that someone is immoral because of their sexual preference. God made us all and his choice for some was to have different lifestyles. Yes you could say that about anyone even murders. But being gay doesn't make you a bad person so to me it is not immoral. I also remember someone saying that being gay was taught and not medically related. I personally have to disagree with that theory. I have mentioned at other times on this board that I have a second cousin, who is now in her 30's, that has CAH. She is GAY. From many conversations I have had with her mother I truely believe it is because of the CAH. She was not well controlled and hence the extra testosterone I believe played a large role in her decision. She refuses to be properly treated now in life as she is happy. I also have some other first & second cousins that are gay. In total we probably have about a dozen of them. Both men and women. I'm not sure how clear I can be in explaining this but they are all on my mother's & my mother's, mother's side of the family. Because of the family line between my son and my second cousin with CAH I know that the gene for me flows through my mother and my mother's mother. I truely believe that the gene is rampent in the family and has showed it's self in the gay memebers of the family. I would also like to poitn out that all the gay memebers of the family are over 35. Years ago they didn't know as much as they do today about CAH and I don't believe that people received the proper treatment as frequently as our children do today. I personally believe that being gay can at times be a taught behavior/choice. But I most definately believe that it is medically related. I was also confussed when you said that the Florinef could be causing this to be happening to your son. I was always under the impression that in CAH patients the kidneys worked backwards retaining potassium and excreeting sodium because of the lack of aldosterone production. Giving these patients Florinef (the replacement for aldosterone) caused the kidneys to work correctly by retaining sodium and excreeting the potassium. I therefore, don't understand the connection. I'm not suggesting that you are misinformed rather I am trying to become more informed. You certainly have opened up quite an issue for debate. But I don't think is is solely over being gay but rather has opened the floor to further understanding our very special children. Judy
