Re: Schools and CAH

I recently went through a similar situation. My son started school in a very rural area. They were great in reference to his CAH. The school nurse communicated with our endo on an as needed basis. Since she was part time in this school. She taught several staff members on how to give injections. A team of staff members kept informed on his condition. This included the principal, office personnel, teachers in contact with him and the guidance counselor. We never had an emergency situation at the school, but I feel they were well prepared. We also met with the local paramedics that would go to the school in an emergency. They agreed to carry Solu-Cortef as long as I provided it. We moved to the Columbus area soon after the first of this year. I had assumed that city schools would have more to offer. See much more and be more willing to accomodate. WRONG!!! Only nurses can give injections and they would not budge. Of course they only have a part-time nurse in the building. They developed an emergency plan to page a nurse, call 911 and call me should my son possibly need an injection. My biggest concern was would they call 911 for every cut and scrape he received. I want him to receive appropriate medical, but also find a balance and not have him traumatized by paramedics whisking him off to the hospital when it is not necessary. At first I was furious because they wouldn't train lay people on injections. Then my endo said something that made me change my mind. He said that you can push and push till you get what you want, but if they are not comfortable doing what you are asking of them, they normally won't respond the way you want in an emergency situation. That statement took me back to the first time I gave an injection and what I went through. As a result I have made the decision to work at home. I'm 3 minutes from the school and for now this is our solution. I hope you can work out something that will work for you.
