Considering the fact that all biological parents of children with CAH have to be carriers I would suspect that it is highly unlikely that we would be denied a life insurance policy purely for being a carrier. EVERY single person walks around with the possiblity of having a child with at least 7 different disorders or diseases. It just depends on who you marry and how your genes line up. The luck of the draw if you will. I have never had a problem obtaining a life insurance policy due to the fact that I am a carrier of the CAH disorder. I did have a momentary delay once when it was noted that I have a predisposition for colon cancer. I had had pre-cancerous polyps removed a couple of years earlier and the insurance company was not sure how to handle this fact. With the help of my doctors and my input I was eventually APPROVED and at a lower rate than my husband's policy. I simply told them that I was a better risk since I knew I had the predisposition. I could now receive the proper preventitive treatment and thereby avoid any complications. That was 8 years ago. I haven't had a problem since and due to job changes, I have had to go through the approval process all over again - TWO TIMES! Having the DNA testing may very likely prove to be a life saving decision. Since my daughter and my husband's side of the family carry a rare strain of the disorder, even if she or any of his family had a child with CAH and had a heel stick done for it, it would come back as not found. There are many people on this board, including myself, who have lost or almost lost a child to CAH due to the fact that they had no advanced knowledge that they carried this disorder. I feel lucky to have such information to pass on. It is true that with the gnome now available to identify the genetic possibilities we need to be more guarded and proactive in our health care. It is also true however, that the possibility for a cure in the near future has just been greatly increased. For that I am extremely and profoundly grateful. I wish you all the best of luck in you decision making. God bless.LynnT
