Dear Janet, Your point that there are many different ways to treat the same condition and that doctors will prescribe what they are most comfortable with and have had success with, is exactly the same point our endo tried to impress upon us when we first talked to him about going to another doctor (because of the growth hormones.) At the time, WE were actually the ones worried about switching to hydrocortisone, since our son had done well on the dex. and our endo had made a good case for it in his paper. As a testament to his generosity of spirit and open-mindedness, however, it was actually HE who tried to convince us that switching to HC (which we knew would happen if we changed doctors) would really be okay, that most other endos used HC, and he was, in fact, in the minority. I believe he compared drugs to religion, at the time, telling us that, like how children usually adopt the religion of their parents, doctors generally prescribed the medications that they had been taught in training. When we broached the subject of going to this new doctor because of the growth hormone study, he was, in fact, our biggest supporter, telling us to "go for it" because it was our son's best shot at possibly making up for any lost height. He also encouraged us to have faith in this new doctor and to trust and follow what she told us, even though it may not be exactly how he would do things. As he was the first to tell us, every doctor has his/her own way of doing things, and he could only vouch for what he had had first-hand experience with! When my son started having problems after being switched to hydrocortisone, we eventually called upon this endo for help. It took several months, however, of sleepless nights and high anxiety to figure out what the problem was. Though we had kept in contact with him after we switched doctors, and tried to ask his opinion on what the new doctor was doing, he never criticized her methods or ever said anything to contradict what she told us, I'm sure, because he didn't want to confuse us needlessly. Even after we had decided on our own that we liked his way of doing things better and asked to bring our son back to him for treatment, he would only say that every doctor was different and he could only vouch for his own experience! I am happy to say that, luckily, his way seems to very much agree with my son!
