Today is my CAH girls 9th birthday. As I remember back how scared we were that first day, I think of all the new parents of CAH children and their feelings. There was no CAH board then, so basically we were alone. Thanks to Texas having CAH as a part of their testing at birth, we knew right away what the diagnosis was for our girl. THe ambiguous genitalia was the hardest to deal with. We were told our baby was most likely a girl, but for us to tell our friends our baby was here and avoid the girl-boy question. THat was hard for us. We told everyone we had a girl. Our daughter has had 9 years of very good health. When I take her for her quarterly endo checkups, I have to walk right by the pediatric onocologist. Seeing some of thoes children in the waiting room makes me thank GOD that if my child has to have a health condition, it is one that is treatable. If I can help in one small way to thoes of you with newly diagnosed children with CAH, I would like to tell you about my daughter. She is wonderful, she is healthy, she is smart, she is beautiful, she is funny, she is a gift from GOD. I am always aware of her health, but it is second nature, not a constant worry. We never miss an appointment with the endo, we make sure there is plenty of meds on hand, never to run short. Your child will be wornerful, smart, beautiful, and healthy too.karen
