Re: surgery

Valerie, My 21 month old daughter is going to need a vaginoplasity. She was adopted at 7 months from China and was therefore not diagnosed until 15 months (she is non-salt wasting). Last May her ped urologist did a cystocopy and bladder xrays to determine how she was put together. We only knew that she did not have a vaginal opening. These two tests showed that there was medically no reason to perform the corrective surgery now. As of now we are going to wait until she is about 4 or 5 for this surgery. The hope is she will be able to understand what is happening to her and be a part of it and also we will hopefully avoid some of the phychological problems that happen when this surgery is done at 8 or 9. Two additional concerns of the doctor were the size of the area he would have to work with -- the bigger the easier. Also he was concerned about her genital awareness. He indicated that most kids get a genital awareness about the age of 2. In the last 2 months it has been amazing how much my daughter has started to explore herself. The doctor did not want to do surgery in an area where she would want to be exploring. Right now I am very comfortable with waiting on the surgery. It is not certain that she will have the surgery at 4 or 5. We will re-address the issue then, or earlier if she starts to have any problems. Hope this helps. Good luck.
