Re: surgery

Valerie, I am the mother of an almost one year old girl. At birth, I was told that I had a boy. After five days, the neonatologist called me at home and told me that I had a girl according to the chromosome testing. We had to rush our daughter to a children's hospital for testing and eventually was given the diagnosis of CAH. We opted for the genital surgery when she was 11 days old. She had vaginoplasy and clitoroplasty (sp). We chose surgery now as opposed to later when she would be aware of what was going on. We had and have complete confidence in our urologist. Her surgery went fine- the results are amazing. She still has a slightly enlarge clitoris, but that is only evident to someone changing her diaper and doing a thorough exam. Our urologist would like to do a little more to recess the clitoris as he is a perfectionist. We, however are not sure about additional surgery. She seems to have feeling in the vaginal area, as indicated when we change her diaper. However, no one knows just how successful the surgery was. Only my daughter on her wedding night. We are still contemplating the surgery. I guess one of the reasons has been because of all the negative responses that I have read on this message board. However, I am not sorry for the surgery that I have chosen for my daughter. I feel that I have done the best thing for her both physically and psychologically. I just hope that she feels the same when she is an adult. There are many things to consider. Good Luck.
