Re: Does anyone have CAH kids with learning disabilities?

I find your question very interesting. I myself am dyslexic. My 7 yr old daughter is extremely bright, in the second grade and began reading in first grade as did the rest of her class. She was one of the better and was reading to other classrooms. My 5 yr old son who is in kindergarten and is my child with CAH, salt-wasting... well he is a bit of a different story. He, like your child is very intelligent in many ways however, is far behind where my daughter has ever been. But is far more creative than she has ever been as well. Being dyslexic I can tell you that is often a sign of a learning disability. Also to set the record straight so that those of you who are concerend about learing disabilities and have not had much experience with them... most dyslexic have very very high I.O's. Infact Albert Einstein was severly dyslexic. I had many concerns in pre-school about my son as did his teacher. My husband has been on the fence, he's just not as tuned into it and is certainly not trying to avoid the subject. My mother also recognizes many of the same traits as she saw in me as a child. He also had a few episodes at school last year (nothing to serious) but he was removed from situations on three different occassions because he got to hyper and couldn't be brought down. I discussed this with his endo and my concerns about possible learning disabilities. She advised me that there has been some discussion as to the connection of L/D to CAH and that as for his behavior... well if it continued that he would need behavior modification classes. She said that it was probable that because he was over exposed to so much testosterone in utero that it left an imprint on his brain. Fortunately his behavior has not continued. Now that we are in kindergarten and with a new teacher I have expressed my concerns and asked that she let me know if she saw anything immediately so that if there is a chance we can get him help as early as possible. Granted it's only a few weeks into the school year for us but she has informed me already that so far he seems right on track for his age and being a boy and a second child (all factors in development). I don't know if I helped in anyway but you certainly have raised an interesting question. Take Care Judy
