Re: stopping production of Cortef suspension

Mark, The reason why Upjohn FINALLY stopped manufacturing this inferior product was due to the fact that it's own specialists found the medication to be unsuccessful in delivering the proper doseage of this life sustaining medicine to 18 out of 19 of the children. Several infants have gone into crisis and died during this time frame. The suspension agent was changed in the medicine in July of 1998 and ever since then there have been hundreds of people having problems with keeping their child in control and alive. My own son's bone age grew from that of a 4 year old to that of a 9 year old inside of 1 year. He will never be able to recapture the growth potential he wasted during that period of time. He began going into puberty at the age of 4 1/2 and suffered a great deal of frustration and confusion as well as discovering feelings that he shouldn't have been aware of for another 10 years. He was a pschycological mess. When he finally was switched to the pill form of cortef, he was in such bad shape that they gave him way more medicine than he needed because it was more important to get him back into control than anything else. How he didn't die during that period of time only God knows. He developed cushinoid symptoms and gained 8 pounds in 1 - 2 months. He became sluggish and ate constantly. He cried out of frustration of becoming so large and asked why God did this to him. He developed anxiety that was never there before, and has to take a shot of growth hormone every night as well as the cortef three times a day. With all of this said, we still feel fortunate that our son survived all of this turmoil and was not one of the poor innocent angels that lost their lives in this catastrophe. My heart goes out to them. Good luck with your switch Mark. It may take a little effort on your part to find an exceptable way to administer it to your child, but it is the best thing for son. You might also want to check and see what your child's latest OHP levels were and have his bone age done just to be on the safe side. Also, I recommend a pill splitter/crusher to help in preparing the cortef pill.
