The corticosteriods that we take with CAH can lead to early osteoporosis. While growing up, I didn't break too many bones...just both of my collarbones which takes only 14 lbs of pressure in the right place to fracture). One had a problem healing, and the doctor at the time placed blame on my CAH. Fast forward 10 years and a bike accident put me into surgery with a compound fracture on the same collarbone. During the surgery to repair it, they took bone graft from my pelvis, and then pelvis broke while I was getting out of bed 1 week later. I didn't fall or anything like that, just rolled a bit on it. The doctor felt it was because a fracture developed during the removal of the graft., and again blamed the CAH for the "weakened bone structure". I was immediately sent for a dexa-scan, which came out at 87% if I remember correctly. But I am a leafy veggie nut and they felt my diet of things like spinach, seaweeds and greens ( I travel overseas often and you would be surprised how many other cultures rely upon leafy things in the diet for substinance...something we don't do here) contributed to the "high" density I had. They truly expected less. Meanwhile, the shoulder hasn't completely healed (they had to do a second surgery when my body pretty much rejected the plate they put in. It simply seperated from the bone bit by bit). Again the blame was placed on CAH and the prednisone I take. In the second surgery they replaced collarbone completely with a cadaver bone. Now, the only problems I have are muscular, and I am told that is to expected. I hate to bore with the personal drama, but you can read into it as much you want.Betsy
