blood tests

Help!! Yesterday was my 18 month old daughter's first ped endo's appt since I discovered this board, so needless to say I had a few questions for him (4 pages). I always assumed everything was fine and I never really asked any questions because if you don't have a lot of information then you don't know what kinds of questions you should be asking. Anyways, I asked him to clarify what tests he runs on my daughter and what are the normal values for those tests. I should explain that we have only been going to this ped endo for 6 months, her old ped endo retired. I just assumed he was testing her for all the normal tests... Plasma Renin, 17 OHP etc. He told me he runs a test called androstenedione, and he would run 17 OHP this time and he didn't think he would use that test any more. He explained that the results are always so up and down he wanted to use the other test because it is more stable. Then he told me he hadn't checked her renin since he has been there because he doesn't do it every time. That means she hasn't had her renin checked since last January, when her old ped endo checked it. What tests do your ped endos run? Has anyone ever heard of androstenedione? I asked him what was a normal level for that test and I thought he told me less than 50 and my daughter's levels last time was .1! I don't know how you can make a medicial judgement using just one blood test. From what I have been reading and hearing is most ped endos run many tests to make an informed decision. I am sorry this is so long, I am just so panicked and a little angry and I am not sure how to approach this. My daughter appears to be doing well but I am afraid something could be wrong and we might not know it until it is too late. I also should explain we do go to the Mayo Clinic (but it is a 3 1/2 hour drive, so we can't go every 4 weeks and I like to keep in touch with our local ped endo) for a second opinion every 6 months so hopefully we would catch something before it became too out of control. They run many tests too and sometimes the ped endos disagree with treatment I am not sure how to handle that either, does anyone else go to two different ped endos? What do you do if they disagree? Thanks ahead of time,I sure appreciate any advice or helpful hints. Laurel
