Wendy-Lee, My 4 year old SSW CAH daughter is on a high fiber diet. She was potty trained at 3 years old but was still having excessive accidents (4 to 5 per day!) and going "pee pee" about every hour sometimes more often. She also had an inability to hold her urine. My husband and I immediately thought this was a result of her surgery since she had to have her urethra redirected. We took her to a ped urologist who put her on ditropan. This made her mouth so dry she could barely speak. When the urologist made a comment like "Huh, I didn't realize Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia was congenital". I ran out of there as fast as I could and found a ped urologist who knew more about CAH and had actually done many of the surgeries Abby had had. Which brings me a very long winded way to tell you, yes Abby has constipation! The ped urologist decided that instead of putting her on medications that would take care of the symptoms but mask the problems to have her start taking 3 tablespoons of mineral oil per day, drink 5 glasses of water and give her 15 grams of fiber or more per day. When he examined her he said her bowel was dialated and was placing pressure on her bladder and he felt very strongly that was the problem. We started seeing results within a month. Less accidents, softer stools, less tummy aches. He said he was not 100% sure that it was her cortef or florinef that was causing the constipation but said he would not rule it out. Now that we have gotten her regulated she only needs to take mineral oil now and then. The funny thing is that my husband and I did not think she was constipated because she was having 1 to 2 bowel movements per day, but they were very hard.
